Position Overview
Join our dynamic team at SEARCH, where we are actively seeking enthusiastic Part-Time, As Needed (on-call) Archaeological Technicians to assist with exciting upcoming archaeological surveys and excavation projects. As an Archaeological Technician, you will play a vital role in the field, working under supervision to conduct archaeological surveys, assessments, monitoring, and data recovery efforts utilizing appropriate methods for each project. Your primary responsibility will involve providing essential field support to various cultural resource initiatives. This position demands a foundational understanding of archaeological field survey, excavation, and laboratory practices.
Core Responsibilities:
- Execute archaeological surveys, monitoring, and excavation tasks for Phase I, II, and III investigations.
- Follow the project’s health and safety protocols while participating in training sessions both in the office and the field.
- Utilize electronic and traditional navigation tools (GPS, iPad/ArcCollector/Survey 123, compass, and transit) to effectively navigate and perform fieldwork.
- Document artifacts, ecofacts, features, excavation units, land use, landscapes, notable environmental characteristics, historic structures, and archaeological sites through thorough photo documentation, maintaining a precise photo log.
- Maintain organized and accurate field notes, maps, drawings, logs, forms, tables, databases, artifact bags, box labels, and additional project documentation.
- Collect artifacts, ecofacts, and samples in line with research designs while keeping a meticulous field specimen log.
- Assist with project-related tasks and errands as assigned by the Archaeologist, Senior Archaeologist, or other project supervisors.
- Organize and maintain field equipment, supplies, vehicles, and work sites.
- Assist in acquiring necessary field equipment and supplies.
- Be prepared for travel, often for extended periods.
- Undertake additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
Essential Skills and Background:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Successfully completed an accredited archaeological field school or possess at least six months of field experience.
- A valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Possess the ability to secure a government security clearance.

- Stay seated for extended periods during travel or office work.
- Walk up to 5 miles per day while carrying gear across uneven terrain.
- Engage in outdoor physical work, often in varying weather conditions.
- Travel to remote locations, frequently exceeding 10 consecutive days away from home.
- Drive for extended periods, up to 11 hours each day.
