We seek a visionary Director to serve as the strategic legal advisor for our Technology, Data, and Operations teams in the UK, helping us forge one of the most dynamic and innovative banks worldwide.
In this influential position at Monzo Bank Limited (MBL), you will join our Legal & Board Governance Collective, a collaboration of legal, company secretarial, sustainability, and public policy experts. Reporting directly to the General Counsel of MBL, you will provide outstanding legal guidance and support to the CTO, COO, and other vital engineering teams as we pursue our commercial goals and enhance our cutting-edge banking technology, data infrastructure, and product software.
- Collaborating closely with MBL’s CTO, COO, and their leadership teams, you’ll play a pivotal role as a strategic advisor, delivering legal insights and commercial advice to advance Monzo’s global technology framework that supports all operational sectors.
- Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the MBL legal team that assists the CTO, COO, and other executives by delivering top-tier advisory support on cloud infrastructure, AI, LLM applications, and technology strategies, as well as managing MBL’s commercial contracts portfolio concerning Monzo’s technology infrastructure.
- Overseeing the team providing data protection advice for MBL’s operations and managing our intellectual property portfolio.
- Offering legal and regulatory counsel on cloud infrastructure, outsourcing, operational resilience, and other legal matters affecting MBL’s technology, data, and operations.
- Facilitating legal support for inter-company services within the Monzo group regarding the implementation of its premium technology, data, and product platform.
- Working collaboratively with the General Counsel, Director of Product Legal, Director of Wealth Legal, and other members of the MBL Legal team, you will supply legal insights and advice to the leaders in the Technology and Operations divisions, as well as board members.
- As a key leader, you’ll contribute high-quality legal advice on technology (including AI and machine learning), commercial endeavors, outsourcing, operational resilience, data protection, and intellectual property, helping to structure MBL’s commercial, technology, and data infrastructures effectively.
- You will cultivate strong relationships as a trusted advisor, working proactively and collaboratively with stakeholders across the Monzo Group—including teams in Platform, Operations, Security, Risk & Compliance, Supplier Operations, Financial Crime, and Fraud—reaching C-suite and board levels.
- Partnering with the General Counsel, you will assess and manage legal and regulatory risks throughout MBL’s commercial and technical ecosystem, ensuring thorough scrutiny of changes during Monzo’s governance process and that supported businesses appropriately adapt to evolving legal requirements.
- As a prominent member of the senior leadership team within the Collective, you’ll stay ahead of and actively monitor legal and regulatory trends pertinent to Monzo’s Platform, Data, and Operations collectives. You will provide strategic insights on legal developments, risks, and opportunities critical to Monzo’s success in a shifting landscape, all while championing AI and LLM models and engaging with the CTO on technological advancements.
- With the Legal and Board Governance collective, you’ll advocate for innovative technology solutions to enhance the efficiency of the legal team, identifying and integrating tools that streamline workflows and improve scalability.
- Effectively managing relationships with external suppliers and law firms, you’ll seek to refine processes around budget management to maximize value while providing high-quality legal support.
- As an experienced leader, you’ll mentor and support legal professionals on your team, spearheading initiatives connected to the Legal & Board Governance Collective.
- You possess exceptional commercial legal expertise with substantial experience in technology, focusing on areas such as AI / LLMs, commercial contracts, outsourcing, operational resilience, data protection, and intellectual property with at least 15 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
- Your background includes advising on technology transformations, AI, and regulatory considerations pertaining to banking operations and technology.
- You’ve likely gained valuable in-house experience at a leading technology or e-commerce organization or have significant technology knowledge while understanding operational resilience and outsourcing in financial services. Alternatively, your private practice experience may involve advising businesses with a strong in-house component in a fast-evolving environment.
- Your proficiency extends to payments infrastructure, encompassing operational aspects and an understanding of the financial services landscape, enabling you to clarify complex regulations and innovate solutions effectively.
- As an articulate communicator, you deliver clear, actionable legal advice, succinctly presenting essential information, advocating for critical issues, and promoting consensus among senior stakeholders.
- Your exceptional organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks allow you to excel independently under tight deadlines across various projects.
- You are a collaborative team player adept at forging relationships across cross-functional networks to solve complex challenges. You can influence critical decisions at the highest levels.
- As a strategic thinker and adept problem solver, you assess risks while recommending solutions that align with both commercial objectives and risk management. You proactively identify challenges and develop clear strategies and solutions that support your teams’ goals.
