    Position Overview

    Join us as a Senior Systems Analyst, where you will play a pivotal role in crafting, deploying, and enhancing technology support and services at UMass Amherst. Your mission will be to deliver exceptional solutions to our executives, faculty, staff, and administrators. This role is key in encouraging the adoption of innovative technologies and steering IT strategic initiatives. In addition, you will provide invaluable leadership, mentorship, and training to our IT system engineers and administrators. Major responsibilities include managing and overseeing enterprise-class Windows/Linux systems, as well as fiber channel and backup environments, all while enhancing the integration with other campus services to optimize operational efficacy and security.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and troubleshoot storage area networks (SANs), fiber channel infrastructure, and enterprise backup solutions within both on-prem datacenters and cloud environments.
  • Lead multiple projects, researching and implementing strategies for the migration and consolidation of complex distributed systems into a centralized enterprise model, including transitioning on-prem virtual servers to cloud-based solutions, network and firewall reconfiguration, and establishing centralized logging and monitoring systems.
  • Continuously analyze and update systems with evolving technologies to meet the needs of the campus community.
  • Monitor system performance, adjusting resources to ensure efficient use across the campus.
  • Implement system upgrades, suggest server configurations, and oversee deployment across test, development, and production environments, including creating automation scripts in various languages.
  • Address alerts and customer-reported issues, exercising independent judgment to troubleshoot or escalate as needed.
  • Create and implement automation tools, integrating them with other central IT services.
  • Contribute to IT strategic planning by researching and implementing best practices to improve UMass IT operations and support institutional objectives.
  • Consult with IT and campus staff regarding system provisioning and centralized maintenance, ensuring optimal use of technology resources.
  • Conduct regular consultations with IT and campus teams regarding system provisioning and centralized maintenance and monitoring purposes.

    Undertake related duties as assigned to fulfill departmental, executive area, and university objectives.

    Qualifications Required (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications)

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7 years of experience in Windows/Linux system administration within a large complex environment, or an Associate degree with 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in designing, configuring, and troubleshooting SANs, fiber channel infrastructure, fault-tolerant systems, and enterprise backup solutions.
  • Proficiency in system scripting with languages such as Python, PowerShell, Perl, or Bash.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, effectively adapting to changing priorities while maintaining accuracy.
  • Demonstrated experience as a technical team lead or project manager, successfully executing cross-department initiatives.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of designing and monitoring efficient processes while identifying and resolving challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with a talent for collaboration across diverse teams.
  • Preferred Qualifications(Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications)

  • Experience in a large complex educational environment with multiple physical and cloud locations is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with virtualization environments, including VMWare, Nutanix, AWS, and/or Azure.
  • Experience with automated configuration management tools for Linux systems, such as RedHat Satellite, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Terraform.
  • Experience managing clustered database platforms like MySQL, Postgres, or Microsoft SQL is preferred.
  • Knowledge of system and network security practices, including virus management, intrusion detection, firewalls, and disaster recovery.
  • Experience with system monitoring solutions, such as Solarwinds.
  • Work Environment and Schedule

    This position primarily operates in a typical office environment.

    Regular Work Hours

    • Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, totaling 37.5 hours per week.
    • Occasional evenings and weekends may be necessary.
    • Participation in a team on-call rotation is required.
    • This role offers an opportunity for remote work, as defined by the University, allowing employees to work outside the UMass Amherst campus, subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
