    Job Description

    At Houston Methodist, we are seeking a dedicated Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) who will play a vital role in the meticulous collection and abstraction of cancer data. This position is crucial for adhering to the Texas Cancer Incidence Act, the standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS CoC), and our hospital’s own guidelines. As a CTR, you will ensure that all cancer-related healthcare information is accurately coded and staged, delivering timely and reliable statistical data essential for comprehensive reporting. Your contributions will also extend to continuous improvement initiatives, reporting, and follow-up programs that support the overarching goals of our cancer care team.

    Core Responsibilities:

    People Essential Functions:

    • Collaborate on the planning and execution of ongoing enhancement programs to guarantee precise, complete, and timely data collection.

    Service Essential Functions:

    • Thoroughly analyze and review healthcare documentation from diverse sources, including system records and physician correspondence, to ensure all cancer cases are completely abstracted.
    • Aid in reporting data to the Texas Department of Health (state central cancer registry), National Cancer Data Base, and other authorized entities in compliance with departmental protocols.

    Quality/Safety Essential Functions:

    • Oversee case finding and data collection efforts in alignment with the Texas Cancer Incidence Reporting Act and ACOS CoC standards, ensuring data abstraction is performed promptly.

    Finance Essential Functions:

    • Maintain departmental productivity and uphold data accuracy to satisfy agency requirements.

    Growth/Innovation Essential Functions:

    • Recognize the continuing education needs within the department and engage in staff development activities.
    • Keep current with knowledge on cancer processes, diagnostic methods, procedures, and treatment variations.

    This role is not exhaustive; employees may be asked to undertake other related responsibilities as necessary. Houston Methodist retains the right to modify job duties as needed.

    Qualifications:

    Education:

    • High School diploma or equivalent (such as a GED or completed post-secondary education) is required.
    • Some college experience is preferred.

    Work Experience:

    • A year of experience in a cancer registry or successful completion of a clinical practicum is required.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    • Candidates must possess the ODS – Oncology Data Specialist credential (formally known as Certified Tumor Registrar, CTR) as certified by the National Board for Certified Registrars.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Competency in performing assigned tasks, evaluated through ongoing competency assessments and performance reviews.
    • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, to effectively handle patient and employee interactions concerning safety and security.
    • Strong communication skills to interact positively with patients, physicians, families, and colleagues.
    • In-depth knowledge of cancer coding using ICD-O, FORDS, AJCC, SEER Summary Stage, and Texas Cancer Reporting Handbook.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and statistics.
    • Basic computer skills relevant to database management and software applications for registry data.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and a detail-oriented mindset.

    Supplemental Requirements:

    Work Attire:

    • Business professional attire is expected.

    On-Call:

    • Employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies, regardless of the designated schedule.

    Travel:

    • Some travel within the Houston Metropolitan area may be required, though no travel outside this area is anticipated.
