    Overview
    In this role, you will cultivate strong relationships with Financial Advisors and internal stakeholders. You will develop the essential skills required for effective underwriting of Life, Disability, and Long-term Care insurance policies in a fast-paced, inclusive environment, all while meeting our quality, service, and production objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Client and Field Engagement

    • Foster credible and effective communication with field partners and clients, addressing case appeals and inquiries while assisting in the business placement process.
    • Offer guidance and support to the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and Financial Representatives on case underwriting and risk assessment.
    • Manage prescreen inquiries efficiently.

    Underwriting Duties

    • Analyze and assess a diverse range of insurance applications; approve, classify, or decline applications based on established guidelines.
    • Conduct independent reviews of applications and comply with underwriting standards while demonstrating a solid understanding of NM product types and recent changes.
    • Exhibit adaptability in the face of evolving underwriting practices while diligently maintaining expected mortality and morbidity levels.
    • Engage in continuous professional development through the early adoption of innovative underwriting methods.
    • Achieve proficiency in Reinsurance programs to optimally place cases.
    • Underwrite applications with leading industry mortality and morbidity standards to ensure the best possible offers. Manage active cases and provide tailored service with minimal guidance.
    • Negotiate and communicate with field partners regarding modified or declined decisions to facilitate policy placements.
    • Enhance knowledge in financial, medical, and lay underwriting evaluations and contribute innovative solutions that uphold Northwestern Mutual as a preferred choice for our customers.
    • Leverage varied channels to obtain necessary information, including digital health data, direct outreach to insured parties, and collaboration with third-party advisors (e.g., accountants, attorneys) with minimal supervision.
    • Collaborate with peer reviewers and medical personnel to discuss pertinent cases, as needed.
    • Meet all performance benchmarks concerning quality, service, and production goals effectively.
    • Resolve issues and escalations with situational guidance.
    • Collaborate with Underwriting Support to manage case trajectories.

    Cross-Functional Leadership

    • Act as an underwriting representative to facilitate product process improvements in collaboration with functional partners and participate in additional projects as required.

    Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience is preferred.
    • At least 1.5 years of traditional underwriting experience is necessary.
    • Strong analytical capabilities, with the ability to make independent decisions and apply sound judgment regarding underwriting rules.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
    • Proficient in various computer programs and software applications.
    • Ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment while being adaptable and organized in setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
    • Demonstrates flexibility in managing multiple tasks within a dynamic work setting.

    Compensation Package

    • Starting Pay Range: $60,340.00 – $112,060.00

    Northwestern Mutual employs a geographic-specific salary structure, meaning the compensation for this position is influenced by various factors, including skills, education, training, and experience of the candidate. Typical salary placements won’t be at the top of the range, as decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. Please note that positions in specific locations may see adjustments in compensation.
