Overview
Forge and nurture strong relationships with Financial Advisors and internal stakeholders while honing your skills in underwriting Life, Disability, and/or Long-term Care insurance policies. Key Responsibilities
- Enhance field and client experiences through proactive communication and effective relationship management, addressing inquiries and appeals as well as facilitating business placements.
- Serve as a trusted resource for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and Financial Representatives, guiding them through underwriting and risk assessment processes.
- Handle prescreen inquiries with expertise.
Underwriting Expertise
- Analyze and evaluate a wide variety of insurance applications, making informed decisions regarding approvals, classifications, or declines for diverse ages and policy amounts, with occasional guidance.
- Apply advanced underwriting knowledge and skills to mentor other underwriters effectively.
- Review applications rigorously, ensuring adherence to established underwriting standards.
- Solve complex underwriting dilemmas and manage escalations effectively.
- Leverage extensive experience with Northwestern Mutual product lines and amendments.
- Exhibit adaptability to changes while maintaining expected mortality and morbidity benchmarks.
- Commit to continuous learning and early adoption of innovative underwriting methodologies.
- Demonstrate proficiency with reinsurance programs to optimize case placement.
- Underwrite applications while consistently targeting industry-leading mortality and morbidity rates to offer the best possible outcomes.
- Oversee case and requirement management, delivering tailored service with expert guidance.
- Communicate and negotiate effectively with Field Partners, especially regarding modified or declined decisions, to assist in policy placements.
- Conduct comprehensive financial, medical, and lay assessments that lead to innovative solutions, reinforcing Northwestern Mutual’s commitment to our customers.
- Utilize diverse methods to gather essential information, including online research, direct engagement with insured individuals, and liaison with third-party advisors (Accountants, Attorneys, etc.).
- Collaborate with medical directors and technical staff to enhance underwriting processes.
- Ensure all practices comply with procedural and regulatory mandates.
- Achieve targeted quality, service, and production metrics consistently.
- Team up with Underwriting Support on case management initiatives.
- Act as a cross-functional leader and subject matter expert, working closely with functional partners while participating in project and departmental initiatives.
- Contribute to the design of the P3 curriculum in collaboration with the Learning & Development / Tech Team.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred, or demonstrated success in previous underwriting roles evidenced by effective case management and quality assessments.
- A minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience is essential.
- Strong analytical abilities to make independent, sound decisions on complex cases while applying rules judiciously.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Proficiency in various software applications and strong computer skills.
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in both team-oriented and independent environments.
- High level of organizational skills, enabling the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities paired with a proactive, self-motivated approach to initiating and leading projects or committees.
- Agile in managing multiple tasks and adaptable in response to a dynamic work environment.

Compensation Overview:
Starting Salary Range:
$76,650.00
Ending Salary Range:
$142,350.00
Geographic Specific Pay Scale:
195 – Structure 110: $84,350.00 – $156,650.00
195 – Structure 115: $88,130.00 – $163,670.00
