In this pivotal role, the Senior Editor and Team Manager serves as the strategic leader for a designated subject area within PLOS Medicine. Collaborating closely with the Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief, the Senior Editor will craft and enact a visionary approach to content creation while advocating for it within both PLOS Medicine and the wider community. This role is integral to upholding exceptional author services and contributing to the development of policies that promote Open Science values.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor Associate and/or Senior Editors.
- Recruit, train, and manage team members while establishing objectives and driving accountability for achievement of goals.
- Oversee the editorial activities of your team, ensuring collaboration with PLOS vendor partners to maintain high editorial quality.
- Develop and communicate the editorial vision and strategy for your team.
- As part of PLOS Medicine’s managerial team and in consultation with the Editorial Board, recommend and establish policies and procedures tailored to your subject area.
- Supervise manuscript evaluation within specific subjects to guarantee prompt and thorough reviews that align with PLOS Medicine’s publication standards.
- Adopt a strategic, data-driven mindset to influence editorial policies, cultivate open science practices, and engage with communities through measurable initiatives.
- Independently provide robust author services while ensuring the efficient processing of manuscript submissions and high-quality publication outcomes.
- Proactively streamline submission processes by managing the editorial workflow within your team’s subject areas.
- Establish and refine procedures for optimized submission handling in your fields of focus.
- Assess publication ethics cases prepared by the Publication Ethics team, working collaboratively for swift resolutions.
- Continuously enhance and update editorial policies as necessary.
- Coordinate attendance at relevant staff editor conferences, representing PLOS Medicine at external engagements.
- Contribute to the innovation and launch of products and services aimed at promoting the adoption of open access and open science.
- Engage with other editorial teams to facilitate cross-journal collaboration.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven experience in managing peer review processes and making decisions based on the scientific value of submissions, alongside enforcing editorial standards in original research publications.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and train staff, with an appreciation for cross-cultural dynamics being advantageous.
- Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- A proactive approach to change, with a positive demeanor.
- Highly organized, efficient, and adept at problem-solving.
Qualifications:
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
- Extended periods of computer use while seated at a desk.
- Occasional national and international travel may be necessary.
- Flexibility to work across various time zones.
The established salary range for this position is (UK) £58,000 – £80,000, (US) $105,000 – $145,000. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below.
