Salary: £80,000 to £100,000 plus on-call bonus

About the Role

Join our dynamic team as a remote Software Engineering Manager, playing a pivotal role in overseeing the daily operations of the NewsNow platform. You will lead a dedicated development team to drive meaningful product enhancements that align with our vision of delivering exceptional news aggregation services.

Your Expertise

We are looking for a candidate who:

• Has a strong analytical background, ideally possessing a degree in mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, or related field
• Demonstrates proficient coding skills in high-level languages such as Perl, Python, C/C++, Go, Rust, NodeJS, Java, or similar, with a willingness to learn new languages
• Is experienced with Perl, Python 3, and NodeJS, and is eager to work with or expand knowledge in these areas
• Exhibits strong scripting capabilities (Bash, Perl, Python)
• Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills, confidently engaging in technical discussions
• Is proficient in Linux server and system administration, including package management and volume management
• Has experience managing containerized workloads using Docker or Kubernetes
• Is adept in Root Cause Analysis
• Shows a strong eagerness to learn and adapt with proven research skills
• Brings at least two years of experience in training and leading teams to successfully deliver projects
• Is willing to lead by example and take ownership of team outcomes

Furthermore, candidates should have familiarity or experience in at least three of the following areas, with a readiness to learn more:

• Distributed or large-scale systems
• MySQL/SQL database design, query optimization, and administration
• Web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Vue/React
• Apache web server and related modules
• Cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
• CI/CD pipeline setup, testing, and administration
• Networking and firewall configuration
• Natural language processing

Responsibilities Lead, Inspire, and Manage the Development Team

Design, Develop, and Implement Innovative Solutions

• Gain in-depth expertise in all NewsNow systems and associated languages
• Scope, design, and create both frontend and backend components
• Upkeep standards for security, scalability, and maintainability
• Address complex bugs and system issues

Monitor, Maintain, and Administer Production Systems

• Oversee servers running Debian Linux and manage containerized workloads (Docker Swarm)
• Supervise replicated databases (MySQL) and volume management (LVM, ZFS)
• Configure firewall settings (iptables/nftables) and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF)
• Contribute to on-call support and resolve production outages effectively
