    Overview

    Join the vibrant tutoring community at BookNook, where passionate educators make a difference as independent contractors, with opportunities to work up to 30 hours per week. Our dedicated BookNook Tutors play a crucial role in bridging the early learning gap for K-8 students during a pivotal phase of their educational development.

    As an Online Reading Tutor, you will conduct engaging live, synchronous online sessions using the innovative BookNook platform alongside video conferencing tools. This role presents a remarkable chance to positively influence the lives of students and help them thrive.

    Please note: We are currently on the lookout for tutors to support programs launching in the Fall of 2025. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis leading up to and throughout the summer, but please be aware that response times may be longer than usual. We are NOT hiring for immediate positions.

    Position Details

    • Position Type: Independent contractor (1099-eligible)
    • Compensation: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)
    • Timeline: Programs commence in Fall 2025
    • Availability: Up to 30 hours weekly based on your schedule and the number of active programs. Flexibility is key, as sessions may vary according to school demands.
      • Sessions occur only on weekdays (no weekends), and can be scheduled before, during, or after school hours.
      • Each program’s duration varies. Tutors are expected to commit to working with the same group of students throughout the program.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Facilitate virtual tutoring sessions effortlessly on the BookNook platform—no lesson planning required!
    • Engage and manage student behavior throughout each session
    • Create a nurturing and respectful learning environment for all students
    • Foster positive, supportive relationships with students
    • Document observations and insights from each tutoring session

    Qualifications

    • Must be 18 years of age or older
    • Must reside and work in the United States, with a valid US mailing address.
      • Important: BookNook is unable to onboard tutors residing in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and US territories.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of reading instruction grounded in the science of reading
    • Proven ability to establish meaningful connections with students to cultivate a motivating and encouraging atmosphere
    • Creativity and adaptability to meet students’ diverse needs
    • Experience in teaching or tutoring K-8 students, including but not limited to: current or former teaching licenses, substituting, assisting, or educating in other capacities, as well as tutoring roles
    • Preferred experience in classroom settings
    • Online teaching/tutoring experience is a plus
    • Completion or enrollment in a teacher credential program is preferred
    • Access to a computer, webcam, and reliable high-speed internet (minimum speed 10mbps)

    Our Hiring Journey

    • Follow-Up: After the interview phase, our team will inform candidates within 5 business days regarding progression to the onboarding stage.
    • Onboarding: For qualified candidates, onboarding details will be provided starting August 2025, which includes setting up your payment options, completing an FBI fingerprint-based background check, and reviewing online training to familiarize yourself with BookNook’s processes and systems.
