    Job Description

We are dedicated to revolutionizing how everyone handles their finances. Gone are the days of complicated and bewildering banking systems. With our vibrant hot coral cards, the ability to get paid early, and engaging financial education on social media, we have a rich history of crafting unforgettable experiences for our customers.

At our core, we are about problem-solving—not just selling products. We aim to transform lives through our innovative solutions at Monzo.

This position is available for candidates based in London or those who wish to work remotely within the UK. The competitive salary for this role ranges from £110,500 to £145,000, dependent on experience, along with stock options and a comprehensive benefits package.

As an Engineering Manager at Monzo, you will be integral to our cross-functional and autonomous teams. These mission-driven squads typically consist of Product Managers, backend, web and mobile engineers, data scientists, designers, and other specialists focused on fulfilling our objectives. Our team structure promotes minimal hierarchy, encouraging teams to take ownership of their decisions.

The Engineering Manager role encompasses three primary areas: people, product, and technical leadership. As a key player in your area, you will oversee technical delivery and outcomes, nurturing and developing top-tier engineering talent while fostering an inclusive culture that enables team members to excel.

As we continue to expand and build new teams, we are always seeking Engineering Managers. We approach hiring with a pipeline strategy, which means your application will be evaluated for all available EM positions. Through the interview process, we will identify your strengths and align you with the role that best fits your experience. We currently have openings across Platform, Core App, and Expansion teams.

    In this position, you will:

    • Take charge of delivery across your squads, closely collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager.
    • Promote high standards of engineering excellence within your teams, clearly communicating expectations and holding team members accountable for their performance and growth.
    • Initially lead a group of approximately 7-10 engineers (specific to the role), providing support and mentorship through regular one-on-ones and ongoing feedback.
    • Work alongside senior engineers to advance technical initiatives that elevate our engineering practices.
    • Act as a communication bridge with stakeholders from other teams, facilitating a focus environment that allows engineers to perform their best work.
    • Collaborate across the broader engineering organization to establish best practices and standards.

We invite you to apply if you are an experienced manager with a robust technical and delivery background who has previously worked as a software engineer.

    Ideal candidates will possess:

    • The ability to navigate ambiguous problem areas with autonomy.
    • Bonus points for experience in experimentation-driven environments.
    • Proven experience in delivery and guiding teams to achieve their objectives.
    • A focus on outcomes rather than processes, prioritizing high-impact strategies.
    • The capability to contribute to and challenge engineering decisions, empowering teams to take the lead.
    • Insight into the characteristics of high-performing teams and a vision for achieving those standards.
    • A knack for coaching and guiding team members toward their goals.
    • A natural talent for inspiring and motivating your team.

Please note, if you’ve applied for a similar role at Monzo and were not selected, we kindly ask that you wait six months before reapplying.

    The interview process includes:

    • An informal 30-minute initial call to discuss your background.
    • A two-stage formal interview process consisting of:
    1. Initial Call Interview (1 hour): Engage with one of our Senior Engineering Managers or Directors, discussing your experiences in people leadership, product delivery, and technical leadership through example-based questions.

    2. Loop Stage (3 hours 30 minutes): Consists of three 60-minute interviews over 1-2 days, plus a 30-minute reverse interview.

      • Team and Org Management (1 hour): Share examples from your leadership experience, focusing on team dynamics and impacts.
      • System Design (1 hour): Collaborate on a technical exercise with a Staff or Principal Engineer.
      • Behavioral (1 hour): Discuss your leadership style and core behaviors as an Engineering Manager.
      • Chat with an Engineering Leader (30 mins): A two-way conversation to address any questions you have regarding Monzo, engineering leadership, or our teams.

We typically complete the hiring process within 3-4 weeks, but we will always accommodate your schedule. Keep in touch with our recruitment team throughout the process, and feel free to reach out to discuss any needs you may have for support based on disability, neurodiversity, or other personal reasons.

    What we offer:

    • A competitive salary between £110,500 – £145,000 based on experience, along with stock options and benefits.
    • Assistance with relocating to the UK and visa sponsorship.
    • Flexibility in your work location, whether based in London or remote across the UK, with occasional visits to the London office.
    • Flexible working hours, trusting you to manage your time effectively.
    • A dedicated learning budget of £1,000 annually for professional development, including books, courses, and conferences.

We are an equal opportunity employer, welcoming all applicants regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, family status, national origin, veteran status, neurodiversity, or disability.
